Welcome
Yes, after 10 years of promising I
finally got around to designing, developing, and creating our
very own website. While some of it is up, please allow me a bit
more time to complete all the site sections, especially the
interactive areas. It is far from complete, though. Please take
that into consideration as you browse our site.
I have decided to make the Plato's
Cave web primarily an informational site and as I develop it,
the bells and whistles will be kept to a minimum. This site is
for our group, so any suggestions on what to include, exclude,
or change would certainly be appreciated.
Forgive the written material on the
website. Most of the stuff I write will be stream of
consciousness so I apologize for the text running on or lacking
clarity. After I get most of the writing done, I will go back
and edit it.
As most of you know, for the most
part, I am not one for photographs. I prefer not to be in them
and am not real wild about taking them. As such, I am afraid my
photo record is fairly limited. I have collected some
interesting ones over the 35 years I have been involved in the
martial arts, and I will hopefully be able to scan and post most
of them.
I will also be developing a site for
you guys I call "Plato's Academy" which will attempt to provide
all of you with the current sports science research and
application. Many times do I hear and read about "scientific
street fighting" or how a certain martial art is "scientific".
Just because one says its science doesn't make it so. It has my
experience that most martial arts and martial artists are
decades behind in the understanding and application of "science"
to the martial arts. One has only to look to the training
methods used in college and professional athletics as well as
those employed at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado, to
realize how far sport science has come and how far behind most
martial artists are. My hope is that Plato's Academy will be the
"Home of the Educated Fighter" and like the Plato's Cave
website, will help you with your training.
To any and all visitors, please
understand that I am developing this site for my students,
instructors, and associates. I am interested in helping my
students in their training and as most of my people know, I do
not like mixing money and my martial arts teaching. Over the
nearly 27 years of educating students at my various martial arts
groups and clubs, I have never profited from the teaching of
martial arts to them. This is not a commercial site trying to
sell martial arts services or products.
With that in mind, you are most
welcome here. Feel free to browse any public access areas of the
website. If you would like to find out more about training at
the Cave, please go to the "About the Cave" section our
Director, Joe Singleton's contact information.

Site Orientation
Review the areas of the site below
and let me know if there is anything I should add (within
reason) that you will find helpful. Several of the areas will
require your input. I will let everyone know what I need from
them as I get to those sections. If you have any suggestions
about what or what not to include, please let me know. Here is a
description of the various sections:
Home
|
This section includes a brief welcome
and explanation, announcements of interest for those that train at
Plato's Cave, and a site orientation (where you are now) that will
explain each of the sections of the website. |
About
|
This section will
explain what Plato's Cave is and how it came to be.
It also includes the training schedule and contact
information for the Cave.
|
Respects
|
This section will
contain bios of my teachers who have given their
knowledge and friendship freely to me.
|
Family

This section will
provide short biographies of those that train at the
Cave, as well as associated instructors.

|
This section will
chronicle my personal training history and include
the evolution from my original martial arts club at
University of Maryland to the Plato's Cave club of
today. |
Curricula
|
This area will contain
the knowledge and skill learning objectives for each
of the curricula offered through the Cave.
|
Training
|
Here is where you will
keep track of your supplemental training outside of
the Cave. Each of you will have a password-protected
training blog and will be expected to keep it
up-to-date. Only you and myself will have access to
your blog will allow me to make suggestions for our
program.
I will also use this
area (initially) to provide some basic training and
sport science information until I get the Plato's
Academy website up (don't hold your breath there) |
Library
|
This section will
include list of my personal martial arts multi-media
libraries. Those who train at the Cave will be able
to borrow and/or download the various resources
identified here. |
Gallery

We will have photos and
video clips in various galleries. If you have any of
these that you want put up, digitize them and either
email them or put them on a disk and I will upload
them to the appropriate gallery. |
Forum
|
We will have at least
one forum where we can keep each other up-to-date,
post training ideas and information, and hopefully
have some of the instructor's instructors post their
own insights. |
Team Troglodyte
|
This section will be
dedicated to the various combat sports that the team
from Plato's Cave compete in, including Burmese
boxing/kickboxing, mixed martial arts, submission
grappling, full-contact stick-fighting, la canne de
combat, and middle style Bando. |
Plato's Academy
|
This will be a portal to
a website dedicated to bringing the most up-to-date
sports science application and research relevant to
the martial arts and combat sports training. |
